
Ian Gibson is a Professor of Design Engineering at the University of Twente, where he also serves as the scientific director of the Fraunhofer Project Center. He is widely recognized for his pioneering work in Additive Manufacturing, Rapid Prototyping, Medical Modelling, and multi-material systems. Throughout his career, Gibson has held academic positions at several leading institutions, including the University of Nottingham, the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore, and Deakin University in Australia. At Deakin, he founded the Centre for Advanced Design and Engineering Training (CADET), a flagship initiative for advancing engineering design education.
Gibson has authored over 240 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored the influential textbook Additive Manufacturing Technologies, which is widely used in academia. He is also a co-editor of the Rapid Prototyping Journal and a co-founder of the Global Alliance of Rapid Prototyping Associations. His contributions to the field have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Freeform and Additive Manufacturing Excellence (FAME) Award, recognizing his lifetime achievements in 3D printing and related technologies. Gibson’s research has had significant real-world impact, particularly in medical applications such as prosthetic devices for small joint arthroplasty.
